In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter listens before speaking. The speech is divided into segments where a person speaks and then pauses; the consecutive interpreter repeats what was said in the target language.

In simultaneous interpretation, the interpreter speaks the message in the target language as quickly as he can from the original language, without pauses.
